Rebellion within a society is often considered to be an action in which common ideologies imposed. The individual imposing these ideologies does not believe in keeping their opinions quiet, rather this individual lets their opinions be known to the society. This phenomenon is evident in George Orwell’s novel, 1984 in which the protagonist, Winston possesses critical features of a rebel. The rebellious personality of Winston is first introduced to the reader through his thoughtcrime’s. This trait is also distinctly seen through the doubts he has towards the governing party. Finally, the characteristic of rebellion is also successfully shown through Winston’s desire for happiness. It is evident that through the novel 1984, Winston is a rebellious character. Winston commits thoughtcrime’s through the progression of the novel by expressing his honest opinions towards Big Brother and his emotions. Firstly, Winston buys a diary in which he does the forbidden, e xpresses his personal opinions about the dystopian society of 1984. This rebellious act can be evaluated through one of his diary entries â€Å"For a moment he was seized by a kind of hysteria. He began writing in a hurried untidy scrawl: theyll shoot me i dont care down with big brother they always shoot you [...] (Orwell 21).† This quote displays how Winston expresses his feelings much more freely towards the Party when writing in his diary than if he was expressing his feelings when talking to someone.
